About KTU SGPA Calculator

The KTU SGPA Calculator is a fundamental tool that helps APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) students calculate their Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). It is an important indicator of academic performance, and its calculation depends on the grade points obtained in each subject and their corresponding credit weightage. Understanding how to calculate SGPA enables students to set academic objectives, monitor progress, and prepare for upcoming semesters better.

Instructions to Use KTU SGPA Calculator

Follow these instructions below to use the KTU SGPA calculator:

  • Input the total number of subjects taken in the semester, including theory, labs, and electives.
  • For each course, enter the credit value as defined by the university.
  • Choose the grade (S, A+, A, B+, etc.) you received in each course. The calculation takes into account all grades, including courses graded as 'F', 'Ab', and 'FE', as they are assigned a grade point of 0.
  • The calculator assigns grade points based on KTU’s grade scale (e.g., S = 10, A+ = 9, F = 0).
  • After entering all details, click the "Calculate GPA" button to generate your GPA instantly.
  • Your GPA, total credits, and weighted grade points will be displayed in the calculation.

Formula Used to Calculate KTU SGPA

The formula to calculate SGPA is:

Where:

  • n = Total number of courses in the semester
  • C i = Credit for the “ith course”
  • GP i = Grade point for the “ith course”

KTU Grade Scale

Below is the grade scale based on percentage to help you determine the grade point of your courses.

Grade Grade Point (GP) Marks Range
S 10 90% and above
A⁺ 9.0 85% to <90%
A 8.5 80% to <85%
B⁺ 8.0 75% to <80%
B 7.5 70% to <75%
C⁺ 7.0 65% to <70%
C 6.5 60% to <65%
D 6.0 55% to <60%
P 5.5 50% to <55%
F (Fail) 0.0 Below 50% overall (CIE + ESE)
OR
Below 40% for ESE
OR
Absent for Honours/Minor ESE
FE 0.0 Eligibility not met or
Failed in CIE Only Courses
Ab 0.0 Assigned to a student who deferred the regular ESE
or
was absent but still meets eligibility criteria

Note:
ESE - End Semester Examination
CIE - Continuous Internal Evaluation

How to Calculate the KTU SGPA?

Below is the step-by-step process to compute the KTU SGPA with an example:

Step 1: List all the subjects with Credits and Grades.

Subject Credit Grade Grade Point
Mathematics 4 A 8.5
Physics 3 B⁺ 8.0
Chemistry 3 C⁺ 7.0
English 2 S 10.0
Programming 3 F 0

Step 2: Calculate Weighted Grade Points (Credit × Grade Point):

Subject Credit × Grade Point
Mathematics 4 × 8.5 = 34
Physics 3 × 8.0 = 24
Chemistry 3 × 7.0 = 21
English 2 × 10 = 20
Programming 3 × 0 = 0

Step 3: Summation of Credits X Grade Points

Total Grade Points = 34 + 24 + 21 + 20 + 0 = 99

Step 4: Sum the Credits

Total Credits = 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 = 15

Step 5: Calculate SGPA

Total SGPA = 99/15
             = 6.6 SGPA

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the minimum SGPA needed to pass a semester?

To avoid academic probation, a minimum SGPA of 5.0 or above is usually needed, and each course must also be individually cleared.

2. How is CGPA different from SGPA?

  • SGPA is for one semester.
  • CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the weighted average of all GPAS over semesters.

3. Do 'F', 'Ab', and 'FE' grades become part of the calculation of SGPA?

Yes, they are counted with a grade point of 0, which can lower your overall SGPA considerably.

4. Is the internal marks taken into account while calculating GPA?

Yes, SGPA considers the total marks of CIE (Continuous Internal Evaluation) and ESE (End Semester Examination). Both aspects are involved in deciding your final grade point.
