Visvesvaraya Technological University students can make use of the VTU CGPA Calculator which enables them to calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in a precise and quick manner. It takes into consideration semester-wise GPA and credit value to calculate the overall academic performance of the student for all the completed semesters. The calculator saves the student's time and reduces the chances of manual errors.
To make use of the VTU CGPA calculator, you need to follow the steps given below:
The CGPA is also calculated in the same manner as the SGPA, considering all the courses undergone by a student over all the semesters of a programme, i.e., the formula to calculate CGPA is:
Below is the grade scale based on percentage to help you determine the grade point of your courses
The following letter grades are also awarded under special circumstances defined below
1) NE: 0 - Credits are not included in CGPA, Attendance below 75%, hence, repeat the course (In case of electives, course change is permitted)
2) AU: 0 - Satisfactory in an Audit course
3) AB: Absent from the Course
4) PP: 0 – Passed in Non-credit course
5) NP: 0 - Not Passed in Non-credit course
6) IC: No credits - Incomplete (a placeholder; gets converted to an appropriate grade after clearing SEE examination, else converted to “F”) else automatically converted to “F”.
7) W: No credits – Dropped/ withdrawn (W is not a grade but only a placeholder indicating that the course has been dropped/withdrawn, and it must be cleared in subsequent semesters.
8) DX: Attendance below 75%
Let’s calculate CGPA for a student who has completed 3 semesters:
Step 1: Enter GPA and Credits for Each Semester
Step 2: Multiply GPA by Corresponding Credits
Total GPA = 8.2×24 + 7.5×22 + 9.0×26
= 196.8 + 165.0 + 234.0
= 595.8
Step 3: Total Credits for All Semesters
Total Credits = 24+22+26
= 72
Step 4: Calculate CGPA
Total CGPA = 595.8/72
= 8.27
Conversions of CGPA into Percentage of marks and Class Equivalence. There is no standard formula for the conversion of CGPA into the percentage of marks.
However, the following formula for conversion of the CGPA on a 10-point scale into the percentage of marks is recommended by VTU:;
Percentage of marks secured, M = CGPA Earned x 10
Example:
If your CGPA is 8.27,
Percentage = 8.27 × 10 = 82.7%
After successfully completing the program, a student's final CGPA is converted into a percentage (denoted as M). Based on this percentage, the student is awarded a classification as follows:
1. How is SGPA different from CGPA?
SGPA is averaging a semester grade point, whereas CGPA is adding all semesters' SGPA along with respective credits to determine cumulative grade.
2. What is VTU passing CGPA?
At least 4.0 CGPA is normally required to pass in VTU. Pasing also varies with respective subject marks and respective course rules.
3. Can I improve my CGPA in later semesters?
Yes, scoring higher GPAs in upcoming semesters can significantly improve your overall CGPA since later semesters usually carry more credits and impact.
4. Will a backlog influence calculation of CGPA?
Yes, a backlog will give the student a grade point of 0 for the course, hence reducing the SGPA and overall CGPA negatively until cleared.
